RAF Woodbridge "Tobacco Housing"

In 1997, Linda and Bob Norway asked if I could photograph building 1075a, one of the single storey houses (what Brits would call a bungalow) in the "Tobacco Housing" are on RAF Woodbridge. On 9th August 1997, I visited the base only to find that the housing had been re-numbered for civilian use - there was no 1075a!

I visited the Housing
Officer, Wally Damant, who was very helpful and who had a map
of the site on his office wall.

Wally's map
showed the housing, each building being marked with both their
military and their new civilian identities, so I was able to positively identify and
locate 1075a.

1075a, now
number 35, was one of several of the houses that were being re-furbished
prior to renting out to civilians. This is the front, looking
back towards the BX.

I had a look round the
back, too.

Then, as luck would have
it, the carpet-layers were working in number 35, so I was able
to go inside...

The front door opens
into the living room

Look round a bit to your
left and you see the serving hatch from the kitchen...

...and further round
to the back window.

Get nearer the kitchen
and you can see down the central passageway that runs the length
of the building.

First on the left is
the kitchen with fitted cupboards...

...and a fitted sink
(these are British terms for this equipment)

Next on the left is the
bathroom - not palatial !

At the end of the passage
is the front bedroom.
